You Probably Don’t Need Another Black Bag
Before adding to your collection, look at what’s missing. A different shape, colour or purpose could make everything you already own feel more considered.
2 minute read

Another black shoulder bag. Another neutral tote. Another structured top handle that feels reassuringly familiar.
There is nothing wrong with knowing what you like. A signature style often comes from returning to the same things. But there is a point at which a collection stops expanding your options and starts repeating them.
Before buying your next bag, spend a little time with the ones you already own. Which do you reach for constantly? Which rarely leave the shelf? And when you get dressed, where do you find yourself wishing for something different?
The answers may be more useful than another saved wish list.
Start with shape
Colour is often the first thing we notice, but shape can make the biggest difference to how a bag works with an outfit.
If your collection is mostly structured, a soft, slouchy bag might bring ease to tailoring. If you favour generous totes, a compact bag could give evening looks a clearer sense of proportion. And if every bag sits on your shoulder, a crossbody might be the missing piece for days when you want your hands free.
Think about scale, structure and how you carry it. Sometimes the gap is a different way of wearing a bag.
Give colour a job
Black, beige and tan earn their place in a wardrobe. But a collection built entirely around neutrals can leave you with several bags that offer much the same effect.
The useful question is which colour works with the clothes you actually wear.
Burgundy can sit beautifully against grey, denim and cream. Deep green can bring depth to camel and navy. Red can give a simple white shirt and jeans a focal point.
Look for a colour that connects with several outfits already in your wardrobe. It should offer a fresh possibility without requiring an entirely new wardrobe around it.
Buy for the life you lead
A beautiful bag can still be the wrong bag for your day.
Perhaps you have plenty of options for dinner, but nothing that comfortably carries your work essentials. Perhaps your weekday tote does everything asked of it, while your weekends would benefit from something lighter. Or perhaps the missing piece is simply a bag that gives your most familiar outfits a little more expression.
Be specific about the role. What will it carry? When will you use it? Does it suit the way you get around?
A gap worth filling is usually one you encounter repeatedly.
Make your existing bags work harder
Before deciding that something is missing, try changing how you use what you have.
Pair your structured work bag with denim. Carry your colourful evening bag during the day. Try the bag you have been saving for an occasion with an outfit you wear every week.
You may discover that your collection has more range than you thought.

The MEA Edit
- Start with shape
- Consider whether a different scale, softer structure or new way of carrying would expand your options.
- Give colour a purpose
- Choose a shade that works with several outfits you already wear.
- Find the everyday gap
- Notice the moments when your current bags fall short: work, weekends, travel or dinner.
- Revisit what you own
- Try familiar bags with different outfits before deciding you need something new.
- Before you buy
- Ask what this bag will let you do, carry or wear that your collection does not already cover.
Your next favourite bag may well be black. The point is to know why it belongs.
